Pappelina
Pappelina is a Swedish brand specialising in beautifully woven, machine-washable plastic rugs for both indoor and outdoor use. The name is a play on the Swedish word papper (paper) and founder Lina Rickardsson's first name, a neat nod to the brand's roots. The technique of weaving plastic carpets was developed in Sweden in 1948, and Lina modernised the craft when she began Pappelina in 1999, after discovering a warehouse of colourful plastic strips while weaving in Dalarna's old mills. Her innovation was to weave twice as much material into each rug, making the colours richer and the carpets more durable. Today, Pappelina produces around 100,000 rugs a year from Kim Fröyen's traditional weaving mill in Dalarna, central Sweden, with about 40 employees and sales in over 40 countries. The rugs are contemporary, hardworking and endlessly practical, soft underfoot, quick to wipe down, and tough enough for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, decks and dining rooms.
