Tony's Chocolonely
Tony's Chocolonely is a Dutch chocolatier on a mission to create 100% slave-free chocolate, the standard for the entire industry. The brand was founded in 2005 by journalist Teun van de Keuken (Tony) after he discovered the chocolate industry was riddled with child labour and modern slavery. He famously tried to have himself arrested for knowingly eating chocolate made with slave labour, then sold 20,000 of his own slave-free chocolate bars in just two days. The "lonely" in the name was a nod to feeling like he was the only one fighting to end the practice. Today, Tony's is one of the Netherlands' biggest chocolate brands and a global leader in fair, transparent cocoa, working through long-term partnerships with cocoa cooperatives to ensure farmers are paid a higher price and supported to lift productivity. Every bar uses fully traceable beans, and the chunky uneven blocks are a deliberate visual reminder that the cocoa industry is still unequally divided. Delicious, ethical and unapologetically loud about it - every bite contributes to a fairer future.
